DAAD Study Scholarship: At a Glance
Eligibility:
- US citizens and permanent residents; non-US citizens who live in the US and whose BA will be granted by a US institution
- Fourth-year students (fellowships process begins during 3rd year) and recent graduates (completed their degree no more than 6 years ago)
Selection Criteria:
- Rationale for pursuing a specific MA program in Germany
- Academic achievement and future academic potential
- Preparation, feasibility, relevance of applicant’s study plans
Candidates for the DAAD Study Scholarship affirm the following statements:
- I can explain how pursuing my desired MA program will equip me to pursue a specific field of research
- I can justify why it is necessary to pursue this specific course of study at my chosen institution in Germany
- I possess the requisite academic background, German language skills, and research background to succeed in my chosen graduate program
Extensive Description
The DAAD Study Scholarship provides funding for a full Master’s degree program at a German university or for study at a German university as part of a postgraduate or Master’s degree program completed in the home country.

Eligibility Requirements
The scholarship is open to those who meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Students in their last year of undergraduate studies at an accredited US or Canadian university.
- US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
- Foreign nationals who live in the USA or in Canada by the time of application deadline are eligible, if your last degree was obtained in the US/Canada, or you will have received a degree in the US/Canada before your scholarship starts. All other foreign nationals may need to apply via a different DAAD office.
- Recent BA/BS or MA/MS graduates who completed their last degree no longer than 6 years ago.
- US/Canadian students in the first year of a Master’s degree program in Germany may apply to fund their second year.
- Applicants may not have been living in Germany for more than 15 consecutive months by the time of application deadline.

Application Process
A complete application consists of the following parts:
- Completed DAAD application form
- Curriculum vitae
- Study Proposal outlining the academic and personal reasons for your proposed course of study
- Letter of admission to study at a German program (may be submitted after being awarded the fellowship)
- Information about your top 3 preferred master’s programs
- University degree Certificate(s), if applicable (e.g. Bachelor or Master)
- Transcript(s)
- DAAD language evaluation. The language evaluation form is a mandatory part of the application form, and must be completed and signed by a faculty member of the German Department at the applicant’s institution.
- 1 signed reference form from a university professor in your major subject or discipline
